Tasting Profile
In the glass, the DRC Richebourg 2009 presents a deep, luminous ruby with garnet highlights and a hint of violet at the rim — a colour of remarkable concentration for a Pinot Noir. The nose is initially closed and brooding, gradually revealing extraordinary aromatic complexity: dark cherry and wild strawberry are underscored by rose petal, dried violet, truffle, and a signature whisper of smoky sous-bois. With time in the glass, sweet spice, forest floor, and a subtle mineral tension emerge, hinting at the limestone-rich soils of the Côte de Nuits. On the palate, the 2009 vintage delivers its famed opulence: a broad, satin-textured mid-palate of ripe, almost candied black cherry and red plum, framed by silky yet persistent tannins that provide admirable structural backbone.
The wine’s natural richness — characteristic of this sun-blessed vintage — is counterbalanced by a vibrant, saline acidity that ensures freshness and precision. The finish is extraordinarily long, layered, and deeply spiced, lingering with notes of dark chocolate, licorice, and sandalwood. A wine of immense evolution potential, best approached from 2025 onwards, with a drinking window extending confidently beyond 2045.
Food Pairing
The DRC Richebourg Grand Cru 2009 finds its ideal match alongside roasted Bresse pigeon glazed with aged Banyuls reduction — the bird’s iron-rich flesh echoing the wine’s wild, perfumed depth. Equally compelling is a pairing with a whole roasted black truffle beneath the skin of a slow-roasted Challans duck, where the earthy truffle resonates with Richebourg’s forest-floor complexity and the 2009’s opulent, broad-shouldered texture.
