Clos Saint-Jean — Visionary Modernists of Châteauneuf
Founded in 1900 and revitalized by the Maurel family in 1998, Clos Saint-Jean has emerged as one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s most exciting modern estates. Brothers Pascal and Vincent Maurel transformed this property through meticulous viticulture and selective parcel vinification, earning accolades from critics worldwide. Their approach combines respect for traditional Southern Rhône winemaking with a precision-driven philosophy that seeks to capture the purest expression of each terroir.
The estate’s 42 hectares span multiple lieux-dits across Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with old-vine holdings in some of the appellation’s finest sectors. Deus Ex Machina represents the pinnacle of their production, a micro-cuvée crafted from exceptional parcels only in outstanding vintages, showcasing the power and elegance that Châteauneuf’s greatest terroirs can achieve.

Terroir et raisins
Old Vines on Exceptional Galets Roulés
Deus Ex Machina is sourced from the estate’s most prized old-vine parcels, with vines averaging over 80 years of age rooted in the iconic galets roulés—large, heat-retaining quartzite stones that characterize Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s most prestigious sites. These ancient stones, deposited by the Rhône during glacial periods, absorb daytime heat and radiate it back to the vines at night, promoting optimal phenolic ripeness. The red clay and limestone subsoils beneath provide essential minerality and structure, while the Mediterranean climate ensures concentration and aromatic complexity.

Vinification et vieillissement
Artisanal Precision and Extended Élevage
Deus Ex Machina undergoes a rigorous selection process beginning in the vineyard, with only the most concentrated fruit from the oldest vines deemed worthy of this cuvée. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled concrete tanks with indigenous yeasts, followed by an extended maceration to extract optimal tannins and aromatic complexity. The wine is then aged for 18 to 24 months in a combination of new French oak barriques and larger foudres, allowing the wood to integrate seamlessly while preserving the purity of fruit and terroir expression.
The élevage is conducted without fining or filtration, ensuring maximum texture and depth. This minimal-intervention approach results in a wine of extraordinary concentration and longevity, requiring years of cellaring to reveal its full potential.
Caractère vintage
2012 — A Classic, Structured Southern Rhône Year
The 2012 vintage in Châteauneuf-du-Pape produced wines of remarkable structure and longevity, following a challenging growing season that demanded skillful vineyard management. A cool spring delayed flowering, while a wet June tested producers’ canopy management abilities. However, ideal conditions from August through October allowed for optimal ripening and concentration. The best estates, including Clos Saint-Jean, harvested at perfect maturity, producing wines with fine-grained tannins, excellent acidity, and impressive aromatic purity—wines built for the cellar rather than immediate gratification.
Notes de dégustation
A Symphony of Power and Elegance
This magnum presents an opaque ruby-garnet robe of extraordinary depth. The nose unfolds in layers, revealing blackberry compote, crushed garrigue herbs, lavender, dark chocolate, and a whisper of cracked black pepper and smoked meat. On the palate, the wine displays monumental structure balanced by remarkable finesse—dense, concentrated dark fruit interweaves with notes of liquorice, Mediterranean spices, and mineral graphite. The tannins are fine-grained yet powerful, providing both framework and texture. The finish extends majestically, echoing with waves of black fruit, exotic spices, and stony minerality. This is a wine of profound complexity that will continue evolving for two decades or more, particularly in the slow-ageing environment of this magnum format.

The magnum format not only enhances the wine’s ageing potential but makes this the ideal centrepiece for an intimate dinner party celebrating Rhône’s greatest expressions.
