Le Domaine

Château Cos d’Estournel 2018 — The Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe

Founded in 1791 by Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel, this legendary estate stands as one of Bordeaux’s most visually striking properties. Indeed, its exotic pagoda architecture reflects the founder’s passion for Oriental trade, while the estate’s reputation has grown to rival even its First Growth neighbours. Classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 classification, Château Cos d’Estournel has consistently produced wines of extraordinary power and refinement, earning recognition as the finest property in Saint-Estèphe.

Moreover, the estate has reached new heights under the stewardship of owner Michel Reybier and technical director Dominique Arangoits, who have invested heavily in precision viticulture and state-of-the-art winemaking facilities. Furthermore, Cos d’Estournel remains the only Cru Classé in the Médoc to have earned perfect 100-point scores from leading critics. This six-bottle lot represents an exceptional opportunity for collectors to secure one of Bordeaux’s most acclaimed modern vintages.

Terroir et raisins

Gravel Hillsides Above the Gironde

The 100-hectare vineyard sits on a remarkable gravel hilltop overlooking the Gironde estuary, with deep clay subsoils that provide crucial water retention during dry vintages. Additionally, the terroir benefits from excellent drainage and optimal sun exposure, creating ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon to achieve full phenolic ripeness. The estate’s parcels are among the highest in the Médoc, reaching 20 metres elevation, which helps moderate temperatures during warm summers. Consequently, the wines consistently demonstrate remarkable concentration alongside elegant freshness.

Vinification et vieillissement

Precision Viticulture Meets Traditional Craft

The estate employs meticulous parcel-by-parcel harvesting to ensure each plot achieves optimal maturity, while severely restricting yields to just 30 hectolitres per hectare in 2018. Furthermore, the winemaking team conducts gentle extraction through temperature-controlled fermentation in a combination of stainless steel and wooden vats, preserving the purity of fruit expression. Each lot ferments separately, allowing the technical team to craft a final blend of extraordinary complexity and balance.

Subsequently, the wine matures for 18 months in French oak barrels, with 50% new wood carefully selected to complement rather than dominate the wine’s character. Meanwhile, the estate’s gravity-flow cellar minimizes handling and preserves the wine’s natural structure. This thoughtful combination of modern precision and traditional savoir-faire produces a wine of remarkable depth and longevity.

Caractère vintage

2018 in Saint-Estèphe — Power Meets Precision

The 2018 vintage proved exceptionally successful in the northern Médoc, particularly in Saint-Estèphe where clay-rich soils thrived despite the season’s challenges. Heavy winter rains replenished water reserves, while the subsequent hot, dry summer allowed grapes to ripen fully without stress. Indeed, Saint-Estèphe’s higher proportion of clay enabled vines to access deep moisture reserves throughout the growing season, avoiding the water deficit that affected more gravelly appellations. Consequently, the wines display remarkable concentration alongside vibrant freshness, creating a vintage of extraordinary ageing potential that many critics compare favourably to the legendary 2016.

Notes de dégustation

A Tightly Wound Powerhouse of Extraordinary Purity

This Château Cos d’Estournel 2018 reveals itself as a backward yet utterly compelling wine of monumental structure and flawless balance. On the nose, intense waves of crème de cassis and blackberry liqueur emerge alongside classic Médoc signatures of graphite and cedarwood. Meanwhile, violet petals and acacia flowers add ethereal lift to the profound dark fruit core. The palate displays thrilling energy and tremendous depth, with tightly coiled tannins providing architectural power yet never overwhelming the wine’s remarkable purity. Furthermore, layers of damp earth, tobacco leaf, and exotic spice build through the extraordinarily long finish, hinting at the extraordinary complexity that will unfold over decades in the cellar.

“A racy, powerful Saint-Estèphe with tremendous depth and off-the-charts purity… needs seven to ten years to truly show its stuff and should drink for forty years and beyond.”

Grand ballon bordeaux

While this wine requires considerable patience to reach its full potential, adventurous collectors opening bottles now should decant generously for at least three to four hours. The wine’s monumental structure and concentrated fruit will eventually soften to reveal extraordinary complexity, making it a sublime match for richly flavoured red meats. Indeed, pair this with roasted rib of beef, game birds such as grouse or woodcock, or aged hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. Furthermore, the wine’s savoury depth complements earthy preparations featuring black truffles or wild mushrooms. However, the ideal approach remains cellaring this exceptional vintage until 2028 or beyond, when its true magnificence will fully emerge.
