Hanyu — The Silent Legend of Saitama
Founded in 1941 in Saitama Prefecture, Hanyu Distillery operated under the Toa Shuzo company for nearly six decades before ceasing production in 2000 and undergoing full dismantlement in 2004. Under the stewardship of the Akuto family, Hanyu became known for experimental single malt production at a time when Japanese whisky was still finding its international voice. When the distillery closed, Ichiro Akuto — grandson of the founder — salvaged the remaining 400 casks, marking the genesis of one of whisky’s most storied collector phenomena.
The Hanyu Card Series, launched in 2005 and completed in 2014, transformed these rescued casks into fifty-four individually bottled expressions, each adorned with a playing card design. The series has since achieved near-mythical status at auction, with complete sets commanding six-figure sums and individual bottles — particularly the rarest suits — trading at exponential premiums. Hanyu represents Japanese whisky’s most dramatic ghost distillery narrative: a family’s refusal to let history vanish, and the market’s recognition that scarcity married to quality creates enduring value.

The Joker — Colour Edition, Bottle #3441
Within the fifty-four-card pantheon, the Joker occupies a singular position — released in both monochrome and colour variants, it stands apart from the traditional suits as the wildcard of the series. This colour edition represents one of the most visually distinctive cards in the collection, its vibrant design mirroring the bold character typical of Hanyu’s rescued casks. Bottle #3441 carries the individual serialisation that authenticates each Card Series release, a critical provenance marker in a market where Hanyu counterfeits have regrettably emerged. The Card Series bottles are presented at various strengths and from diverse cask types, reflecting Ichiro Akuto’s decision to honour each cask’s individual character rather than impose uniformity across the collection.

Profil de dégustation
Individual Card Series bottlings vary significantly depending on cask selection and maturation length. Hanyu’s house character — shaped by the distillery’s pot still configuration and the Saitama climate — typically demonstrates a balance between malt sweetness, restrained oak influence, and a subtle complexity that rewards patient examination. Without verified tasting notes specific to this numbered bottle, we decline to fabricate a profile; collectors acquiring at this level understand that each Card Series expression reveals its own personality, best discovered in the glass rather than in generalised marketing text.
Provenance et authentification
Wines & Spirits SA sources ultra-rare Japanese bottlings exclusively through a vetted network of fifty certified suppliers with documented chain-of-custody protocols. This Joker Colour edition arrives with full provenance documentation and has been stored since acquisition in our climate-controlled cellar facility, maintained at a constant 14°C and 70% relative humidity with 24/7 environmental monitoring. At this price tier — where Hanyu counterfeits represent a genuine market risk — we provide written authenticity guarantees and retain photographic records of every bottle’s label, capsule, and serial number. For collector-grade acquisitions, we strongly recommend in-person inspection at our Lausanne location prior to purchase; we welcome the scrutiny that serious collectors rightly demand.

Market Trajectory and Investment Profile
The Hanyu Card Series occupies a unique position in whisky collecting: it is both complete (fifty-four cards, finite supply) and permanently irreplaceable (no further bottlings possible from a dismantled distillery). Auction records demonstrate sustained appreciation since 2014, with certain high-demand cards — particularly face cards and Jokers — outpacing the broader Japanese whisky market. A complete Card Series set sold at Bonhams Hong Kong in 2019 for HKD 3.8 million (approximately USD 490,000), establishing a benchmark that individual card valuations continue to reference.
The colour Joker, as a non-suit card, appeals both to completionists assembling the full series and to collectors seeking statement pieces with immediate visual impact. Its market liquidity remains high within the specialist Japanese whisky community, though condition sensitivity — particularly label and capsule integrity — significantly affects resale value. Collectors treating this as an investment asset should maintain current storage conditions and retain all documentation; those intending to open the bottle should recognise that consumption represents a permanent exit from the investment calculation. Either approach is legitimate; the choice depends on whether you value liquid history in the glass or on the shelf.

If you choose to open this bottle — a decision we neither encourage nor discourage — treat the ritual with the ceremony it deserves. Allow the whisky extended aeration time in the glass; ghost distillery spirits often reveal layered complexity that emerges only with patience. This is a contemplative dram for significant moments: the completion of a collection, a milestone anniversary, or an evening when you wish to taste a chapter of Japanese whisky history that can never be written again. Share it with someone who understands what it represents, or reserve it for solitary reflection. Either way, pour with intention.
