Château d’Yquem — The Pinnacle of Sauternes
Château d’Yquem stands alone in the wine world as the only estate ever granted Premier Cru Supérieur status in the 1855 Classification of Sauternes and Barsac. For over four centuries, this iconic property has belonged to the Lur Saluces family and now the LVMH group, maintaining an uncompromising dedication to producing the world’s greatest sweet wine. The estate’s meticulous approach sees yields as low as one glass per vine, with each grape hand-selected berry by berry through multiple passages of pickers during harvest.
What sets Yquem apart is its extraordinary ageing potential and complexity, born from the marriage of noble rot, exceptional terroir, and fanatical attention to detail. The château releases wine only in vintages deemed worthy of the name, sometimes rejecting entire harvests when conditions fail to meet their exacting standards. This magnum format preserves the wine’s longevity even further, making it an exceptional acquisition for serious collectors.

Terroir et raisins
The Summit of Sauternes Terroir
Yquem’s 113 hectares of vineyards occupy the highest point in Sauternes, where gravel and sand soils over a clay and gravel subsoil provide perfect drainage while the proximity to the Ciron river creates the autumn morning mists essential for botrytis cinerea development. This noble rot concentrates the grapes’ sugars and aromatic compounds, transforming them into liquid gold. The estate’s blend traditionally favours Sémillon for its richness and ageing capacity, balanced by Sauvignon Blanc’s lift and freshness.

Meticulous Craftsmanship
Harvest at Yquem unfolds over multiple weeks, with each vine visited up to six times to select only perfectly botrytised grapes at optimal concentration. After gentle pressing, the must ferments and ages for approximately three and a half years in new French oak barrels, with regular racking to develop complexity while maintaining purity and freshness. This extended élevage allows the wine to integrate its richness with the oak influence, creating the hallmark balance that defines great Yquem.
The château produces only one barrel per hectare on average, an astonishingly low yield that ensures every drop achieves their standards. The final blend is assembled with painstaking care, and in lesser vintages, wine deemed unworthy of the Château d’Yquem label is declassified entirely or bottled as the estate’s second wine, “Y”.
Caractère vintage
2005 — A Classic Sauternes Vintage
The 2005 vintage in Sauternes is widely regarded as exceptional, combining ideal conditions for noble rot development with a long, dry autumn that allowed unhurried, selective harvesting. The wines show remarkable concentration, purity, and structural backbone, with the kind of natural acidity that promises decades of graceful evolution. At Yquem, the 2005 demonstrates the estate’s ability to balance opulent richness with crystalline precision, showing the trademark elegance that defines this legendary property in its finest hours.
Notes de dégustation
Liquid Perfection
Château d’Yquem 2005 presents a luminous golden hue with amber reflections. The nose reveals extraordinary complexity: waves of honeyed apricot, crème brûlée, and candied citrus peel mingle with notes of white flowers, toasted almonds, and a subtle spice character from the oak. On the palate, the wine achieves a perfect equilibrium between luscious sweetness and vibrant acidity, with layer upon layer of ripe peach, pineapple, saffron, and botrytis-derived nuances. The finish extends magnificently, leaving impressions of honey, minerals, and a whisper of vanilla that linger for minutes. This is Yquem at its most refined, showing both immediate pleasure and immense ageing potential.
