Toppling Goliath’s Brandy Barrel Meteora is a cellar-born American barleywine of uncommon depth, poured from the Iowa brewery’s legendary barrel program after two full years of patient maturation in brandy casks. In the glass it reveals a seductive deep ruby-garnet hue, glowing amber at the edges, with a modest off-white head that settles quickly into a thin protective ring — a hallmark of high-gravity, barrel-aged barleywines. The nose is immediately expressive: warm brandy spirit lifts layers of sweet molasses, Medjool dates, brown sugar, and dried fig, with a whisper of toasted oak and vanilla rounding out the bouquet. On the palate the mouthfeel is plush and almost vinous, coating every surface with a richly textured sweetness that stops short of cloying.

Caramel-chocolate candy, light raisin, and dried stone fruit dominate the mid-palate, while the brandy barrel integration lends a soft, warming spirit quality distinct from bourbon-aged counterparts. Bitterness is restrained — present enough to anchor the sweetness but never assertive. The finish is long, warming, and gently spiced, with lingering toffee and a trace of dried cherry.
