Château Léoville Poyferré — A Super Second of Saint-Julien

Château Léoville Poyferré stands as one of the three illustrious Léoville estates that once formed a single grand domain in Saint-Julien. Established in its current form in 1840 following the division of the original Léoville property, Poyferré was classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the landmark 1855 Classification. The estate takes its name from Baron Jean-Marie de Poyferré de Cères, whose family stewardship shaped its early identity.

Since 1920, the Cuvelier family has owned and managed the property with unwavering dedication to excellence. Under the direction of Didier Cuvelier since the 1970s, Léoville Poyferré has ascended to “super second” status, producing wines of exceptional depth, structure, and longevity that rival the First Growths. The 80-hectare vineyard borders Château Latour and Léoville Las Cases, occupying prime gravelly terroir that yields wines of classical Saint-Julien poise and power.

Terroir & Trauben

Grand Vin from Legendary Gravels

The Léoville Poyferré vineyard occupies a privileged position on the renowned Günzian gravel croupes of Saint-Julien, sharing geological continuity with neighbouring Pauillac First Growths. These deep beds of fine Pyrenean gravels over clay-limestone subsoils provide exceptional drainage and heat retention, creating ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon to achieve perfect phenolic ripeness while maintaining freshness and structure.

The estate’s Grand Vin is typically composed of approximately 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, though exact proportions vary by vintage to reflect the year’s character. This classic Left Bank blend captures the essence of Saint-Julien: the power and tannic structure of great Cabernet tempered by Merlot’s plush fruit and aromatic complexity.

Weinbereitung & Reifung

Traditional Methods, Modern Precision

Léoville Poyferré employs meticulous parcel-by-parcel vinification in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete tanks, allowing each terroir segment to express its unique character. Fermentation follows a traditional protocol with extended maceration periods of 20-28 days to extract optimal colour, structure, and complexity without harsh tannins. The winemaking team, led by technical director Isabelle Davin, applies gentle extraction techniques and careful cap management throughout cuvaison.

The Grand Vin is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, with approximately 80% new oak for top vintages. The cooper selection emphasizes fine-grained wood from renowned forests including Allier and Tronçais, imparting subtle vanilla and spice notes while allowing the wine’s fruit purity and terroir expression to remain paramount. Malolactic fermentation occurs in barrel, adding textural richness and seamless oak integration.

Vintage-Charakter

2010 — A Legendary Médoc Vintage

The 2010 vintage stands as one of the greatest years in modern Bordeaux history, particularly for the Left Bank’s Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines. An ideal growing season featured a warm, dry summer with perfectly timed August rainfall that refreshed the vines without diluting concentration. September brought extended sunshine and cool nights, allowing slow, even ripening that produced thick-skinned berries with extraordinary phenolic maturity and balanced acidity.

In Saint-Julien, 2010 yielded wines of monumental structure and classical proportions—powerful yet refined, with dense fruit concentration balanced by remarkable freshness and precision. Léoville Poyferré’s 2010 captures the vintage’s essence: a wine built for decades of cellaring, combining youthful intensity with the architectural tannins and profound depth that define great Médoc in legendary years.

Verkostungsnotizen

Power, Elegance, and Timeless Structure

Léoville Poyferré 2010 presents a profound, inky garnet colour with youthful purple highlights. The nose unfolds in layers: intense cassis and blackberry fruits interwoven with cedarwood, graphite, and subtle tobacco leaf, accented by violets and dark chocolate. On the palate, the wine displays magnificent density and concentration, with pure blackcurrant and plum fruits supported by a framework of firm yet polished tannins. The mid-palate shows exceptional breadth and depth, while the finish extends with remarkable persistence, revealing notes of liquorice, espresso, and sweet spice. This is a monumental wine of classical proportions—structured for long ageing yet already showing the harmony and complexity that define great Saint-Julien.
