Château Pontet-Canet — Pauillac’s Biodynamic Pioneer

Classified Fifth Growth in 1855, Château Pontet-Canet has ascended to become one of Pauillac’s most compelling estates, regularly producing wines of First Growth quality. Under the visionary stewardship of Alfred Tesseron and his family since 1975, this 81-hectare property has undergone a remarkable transformation, converting entirely to biodynamic viticulture in 2010 and achieving full certification by 2014. The estate’s commitment to natural farming, including the use of horses for ploughing and elaborate compost preparations, has elevated Pontet-Canet to the vanguard of terroir-driven winemaking in Bordeaux.

The property’s name derives from Jean-François de Pontet, royal governor of the Médoc in the early 18th century, combined with “Canet,” the hamlet where the estate stands. Today, Pontet-Canet regularly outperforms its modest classification, earning critical acclaim that rivals the region’s most prestigious names. This lot of six bottles offers collectors an opportunity to secure a half-case of one of Pauillac’s most consistently brilliant wines.

Terroir & Trauben

Exceptional Gravel Terroir Neighbouring Mouton Rothschild

Pontet-Canet’s vineyards occupy a privileged position on the Pauillac plateau, sharing the same exceptional gravel terrace as First Growth Château Mouton Rothschild to the south. The deep Günzian gravel beds, deposited during the Quaternary period, provide perfect drainage and moderate water stress, compelling the vines to root deeply into the limestone subsoil. This terroir naturally favours Cabernet Sauvignon, which thrives in the warm, stony soils, developing profound structure and remarkable aromatic complexity. The estate’s old vines, with an average age exceeding 40 years, contribute extraordinary concentration and depth to the final blend.

Weinbereitung & Reifung

Meticulous Biodynamic Winemaking

Harvested entirely by hand with multiple passes through the vineyard to ensure optimal ripeness, the grapes undergo rigorous optical sorting before vinification. Fermentation takes place in traditional concrete vats, with gentle extraction techniques that respect the delicate fruit character while building structure. The estate’s commitment to minimal intervention extends to the cellar, where indigenous yeasts conduct the alcoholic fermentation and malolactic conversion occurs naturally without temperature manipulation.

Following assemblage, the wine matures for approximately 16 months in French oak barriques, with typically 60-70% new wood sourced from the estate’s own cooperage. This extended élevage allows the wine to integrate its components harmoniously while developing the signature elegance and complexity that defines modern Pontet-Canet. The estate bottles without fining or filtration when the vintage permits, preserving maximum aromatic expression and textural richness.

Vintage-Charakter

2019 — A Stellar Left Bank Vintage

The 2019 vintage delivered exceptional conditions for Bordeaux’s Left Bank, with a warm, dry summer followed by crucial September rainfall that refreshed the vines without diluting concentration. For Pauillac’s Cabernet Sauvignon, the growing season proved ideal, yielding grapes of remarkable phenolic maturity balanced by refreshing acidity. The combination of moderate yields, healthy fruit, and extended hang time allowed producers like Pontet-Canet to craft wines of extraordinary precision and aging potential.

Critics have hailed 2019 as one of the finest recent vintages in the Médoc, with wines displaying classical structure, vibrant fruit purity, and remarkable freshness despite the warm conditions. The vintage’s natural balance means these wines will develop beautifully over decades while remaining accessible and expressive in their youth—a rare combination that places 2019 alongside the great vintages of the 21st century.

Verkostungsnotizen

Leistung trifft auf Präzision

The 2019 Pontet-Canet presents a deep, luminous garnet robe with violet highlights, immediately announcing its youth and concentration. The nose opens with profound layers of crème de cassis, black cherry, and freshly crushed blackberries, interwoven with cedar, graphite, and subtle violet notes. As the wine breathes, secondary aromatics emerge—dark chocolate, espresso, sweet tobacco, and a distinctive mineral signature reminiscent of crushed stone. On the palate, the wine displays magnificent density and power, yet maintains remarkable elegance through its silky, fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. The mid-palate reveals exceptional purity of fruit, leading to a finish of extraordinary length, marked by echoes of black fruit, liquorice, and subtle spice. This is Pauillac at its most compelling—structured yet refined, powerful yet graceful, a wine that captures the essence of its noble terroir.
