Château La Lagune — Elegance at the Gateway to the Médoc

Château La Lagune stands as the first classified growth encountered when travelling north from Bordeaux into the Médoc, positioned in the commune of Ludon. This Third Growth (Troisième Grand Cru Classé 1855) estate has enjoyed a remarkable renaissance since its acquisition by the Frey family in 2000, who have invested significantly in both vineyard and cellar to restore La Lagune to its historic prestige. The 80-hectare property takes its name from the small lagoons that once dotted this gravelly outcrop, and today ranks among the Médoc’s most consistent and refined producers.

Under the winemaking direction of Caroline Frey, La Lagune has achieved a distinctive style that balances power with remarkable finesse and aromatic complexity, earning critical acclaim vintage after vintage. The estate’s commitment to biodynamic principles and meticulous vineyard management has elevated the quality to rival many Second Growths. This lot of six bottles represents an excellent opportunity for collectors to acquire a case of one of Bordeaux’s most elegant and age-worthy wines from the outstanding 2019 vintage.

Terroir & Trauben

Gravelly Terroir of the Southern Médoc

La Lagune’s vineyard lies on one of the finest gravel ridges in the Haut-Médoc appellation, with deep Günzian gravel beds over clay-limestone subsoil providing excellent drainage and natural regulation of the vines’ water supply. The proximity to the Gironde estuary creates a temperate microclimate that moderates temperature extremes, while the gravelly soils reflect heat back to the vines, promoting optimal phenolic ripeness. The encépagement blends approximately 60% Cabernet Sauvignon with 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot, a composition that perfectly expresses the estate’s terroir through a combination of structure, flesh, and aromatic complexity.

Weinbereitung & Reifung

Precision and Respect

La Lagune employs a meticulous approach to winemaking that begins with hand-harvesting into small crates and double sorting both before and after destemming. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete vats, with each parcel vinified separately to preserve individual terroir expression. Gentle extraction through délestage and pigeage ensures optimal colour and tannin extraction without harshness, while extended maceration periods of up to four weeks develop complexity and structure.

The wine matures for 18 months in French oak barriques, with approximately 60% new oak providing subtle spice and vanilla notes while respecting the wine’s elegant fruit expression. The estate’s modern cellars maintain optimal humidity and temperature, allowing the wine to develop harmoniously. Egg-white fining is employed judiciously before bottling, preserving the wine’s natural texture and aromatic purity.

Vintage-Charakter

2019 — A Bordeaux Classic in the Making

The 2019 vintage ranks among the finest recent years in Bordeaux, combining near-perfect growing conditions with moderate yields to produce wines of exceptional balance and ageing potential. After a mild winter and early budbreak, the growing season progressed with ideal alternation between warm, sunny periods and refreshing rainfall, ensuring steady ripening without water stress. The Médoc particularly benefited from the vintage’s even maturation, allowing both Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to achieve full phenolic ripeness while retaining vibrant acidity.

Harvest at La Lagune took place under optimal conditions from late September through mid-October, with each variety picked at perfect maturity. The resulting 2019 displays remarkable concentration, silky tannins, and the classical structure that will reward patient cellaring for decades to come. Critics have hailed 2019 as a vintage that combines the power of great years with the elegance and freshness that define the finest Bordeaux.

Verkostungsnotizen

Sophisticated Médoc Expression

Château La Lagune 2019 reveals itself in the glass with a deep ruby-purple robe of remarkable brilliance and intensity. The nose opens with captivating aromas of blackcurrant, black cherry, and wild blackberry, interwoven with notes of violet, graphite, and cedar from the oak ageing. With aeration, nuances of dark chocolate, espresso, and sweet spice emerge, alongside a distinctive mineral signature that speaks to the gravelly terroir. On the palate, the wine displays exceptional balance between concentration and refinement, with velvety tannins supporting layers of ripe black fruit, liquorice, and tobacco leaf. The mid-palate shows remarkable density and precision, while the finish extends gracefully with fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins that promise excellent evolution over the next two to three decades.

This refined Médoc pairs beautifully with roasted rack of lamb with herb crust, grilled côte de boeuf with bone marrow, or confit duck with wild mushrooms. The wine’s silky texture and aromatic complexity also complement aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Mimolette, while its elegant structure stands up magnificently to venison medallions with juniper berry sauce. For those wishing to cellar this wine, store bottles horizontally in a cool, dark environment at 12–14°C with consistent humidity levels to ensure optimal maturation over the coming decades.
