Château La Gaffelière — Premier Grand Cru Classé Excellence
Château La Gaffelière stands as one of Saint-Émilion’s most storied estates, its origins tracing back to Gallo-Roman times when the site served as a leper colony (“gaffelière” derives from the old French for leper house). The modern château was established in the late 19th century, and since 1971 has been owned and meticulously managed by the Malet Roquefort family, whose stewardship has elevated La Gaffelière to Premier Grand Cru Classé (B) status in the 2012 Saint-Émilion classification.
Under the direction of Léo de Malet Roquefort and the legendary consultant oenologist Stéphane Derenoncourt, the estate has transformed into a benchmark producer of Right Bank Bordeaux. The 22-hectare vineyard benefits from an exceptional location at the foot of Saint-Émilion’s limestone côtes, combining the elegance of hillside terroir with the power and depth of the valley floor.
Terroir & Trauben
Limestone Côtes Meet Clay-Limestone Valley
La Gaffelière’s vineyard stretches across two distinct soil types that define its exceptional complexity. The upper slopes feature limestone bedrock with thin topsoil (argilo-calcaire), providing natural drainage and mineral tension, while the lower parcels rest on deep clay-limestone deposits that give richness and volume. This dual terroir allows the estate to craft wines of remarkable balance, marrying aromatic finesse with concentrated fruit and structured tannins.
The vineyard is planted predominantly to Merlot, as befits the Right Bank, with supporting roles from Cabernet Franc and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon. Sustainable viticulture practices include careful canopy management and green harvesting to ensure optimal ripeness and concentration in every vintage.
Weinbereitung & Reifung
Precision Winemaking with Derenoncourt’s Touch
Harvest at La Gaffelière is conducted parcel by parcel at optimal maturity, with fruit transported in small crates to preserve berry integrity. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled concrete and stainless steel tanks, with gentle pump-overs and extended maceration to extract colour, tannins and aromatics without harshness. Stéphane Derenoncourt’s philosophy of minimal intervention guides every decision, allowing the terroir to express itself with clarity.
Élevage unfolds over 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, typically 50-70% new depending on the vintage character. The wines are racked traditionally and bottled without fining or filtration when the structure and balance are deemed ideal, preserving maximum texture and aromatic complexity.
Vintage-Charakter
2019 — A Stellar Right Bank Vintage
The 2019 vintage in Saint-Émilion is widely celebrated as one of the finest of the decade, combining ideal weather conditions with exceptional ripeness and balance. A warm, dry summer with timely rainfall in early September allowed Merlot and Cabernet Franc to achieve full phenolic maturity while retaining natural freshness and acidity. The resulting wines display impressive concentration, velvety tannins, and remarkable aromatic purity.
At La Gaffelière, the 2019 vintage captures the estate’s signature elegance and depth, showcasing ripe dark fruit, limestone minerality, and seamless integration of oak. This is a wine built for both early accessibility and long-term cellaring, embodying the harmonious character of this exceptional year on Bordeaux’s Right Bank.
Verkostungsnotizen
Silky Elegance Meets Concentrated Depth
Château La Gaffelière 2019 opens with a captivating bouquet of blackberry, cassis and ripe plum, interwoven with notes of violet, graphite and subtle cedar from oak maturation. The palate is beautifully structured yet remarkably supple, with velvety tannins supporting layers of dark fruit, crushed stone minerality, and hints of sweet spice and tobacco. The limestone terroir expresses itself in a lifting freshness and mineral tension that carries the wine to a long, refined finish. This is Saint-Émilion at its most graceful — powerful yet perfectly balanced, built for pleasure both now and over the next two decades.

Servierempfehlungen
This elegant Saint-Émilion pairs beautifully with roasted duck breast, rack of lamb with herb crust, or aged beef tenderloin. The wine’s silky texture and mineral backbone also complement earthy dishes such as wild mushroom risotto, truffle-infused preparations, or mature French cheeses like Comté or Beaufort. For a classic pairing, serve alongside magret de canard with a cherry reduction or roasted pigeon with foie gras.
