Baladin Xyauyù Barrel Riserva 2017 pours a deep chocolate brown with copper nuances, completely still and headless — a visual testament to its wine-like character and the intentional macro-oxidation process conceived by founder Teo Musso at the Birrificio Agricolo Baladin farm brewery in Piozzo, Italy. The nose is extraordinarily complex: rich caramel and toffee open proceedings, followed by layers of dried dates, dark raisins, and spiced rum lifted from the oak barrel conditioning, with a faint herbaceous, almost Benedictine-like undercurrent rounding out the bouquet. On the palate, the mouthfeel is full, chewy, and almost syrupy — uncarbonated and silky, closer in texture to an aged tawny port or oxidized sherry than anything conventional in the beer world.

Sweetness dominates the mid-palate with molasses, fig, and candied dark fruit, while a delicate wooden note and light vanilla provide structure and prevent cloying excess. The finish is long, warming, and umami-tinged, lingering well beyond the sip. This is a beer engineered for contemplation and slow sipping.
