Yoichi 12

The Yoichi Distillery was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru — the father of Japanese whisky — in the town of Yoichi on Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island. Taketsuru chose Yoichi after extensive travels in Scotland, finding its cold, rugged, ocean-facing climate the closest equivalent to the Scottish Highlands in all of Japan. Yoichi remains the only major Japanese distillery to use direct coal-fired distillation, a traditional method that imparts a distinctive robust, smoky and complex character to its spirit. The distillery produces whiskies of remarkable power and depth — peaty, maritime, rich with dark fruit and spice — that stand apart from the more delicate style of mainland Japanese distilleries. Single malt expressions from Yoichi, particularly the rare age-stated releases, are among the most prized Japanese whiskies among connoisseurs and collectors worldwide.
