Karuizawa Distillery operated in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, from 1955 to 2000 — nestled at the foot of Mount Asama volcano, at an altitude of 850 metres, in one of Japan’s most dramatic natural landscapes. The distillery used the rare Scottish Golden Promise barley variety and aged its whisky exclusively in hand-selected Oloroso sherry casks from Spain, creating a house style of unparalleled richness and complexity. The combination of Karuizawa’s cold mountain climate, pure volcanic water and exceptional cask quality produced whiskies of extraordinary depth — cascading layers of dark fruit, dried fig, exotic spice, rancio and floral elegance. Since the distillery’s closure in 2000, the remaining stock has been carefully bottled by Number One Drinks Company in a series of single cask releases, each one rarer than the last. Karuizawa expressions now command prices ranging from several thousand to over twenty thousand Swiss Francs at auction, and are universally regarded as among the greatest single malt whiskies ever produced on earth.
